Ever thought about writing but wondered what was involved?
Edcuate.ie is always interested in hearing ideas from practicing teachers. If you have an idea for a book, eBook, digital resource or some other materials for the post-primary classroom, contact Sinéad Keogh, (sineadkeogh@educate.ie) to discuss it further. Paula Purcell can be contacted about Primary books (paula@educate.ie).
Questions that you might ask yourself before contacting us would include the following:
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of the current materials on the market?
- How will yours be different? Think of at least three unique features that you would have.
- What are the current challenges in the classroom for your subject and how are you addressing these?
- Are you good at giving yourself targets and meeting deadlines?
If we are interested in developing your idea, we will ask you to submit a sample of what you are proposing – perhaps a topic or a full chapter – and this will be peer reviewed. If the proposal is accepted, then a schedule of submission is agreed and a publication date set.
Once you have written the material and it has been extensively reviewed and assessed, it then goes into production. You will work with a team that could include some or all of the following professionals: an editor, a designer, a picture researcher, a copyright clearance editor, an animator, etc. We all work together to produce the best possible resources for the Irish classroom.
When the material is ready, you may be required to assist the sales and marketing team in promoting it at teacher conferences, etc.
Perhaps you would just like to help?
If you are not sure if you would like to write yourself, but think you might be good at reviewing materials, then you could be part of our review panel. Just contact Sinéad and give her your details, which will be retained on file for when a suitable project arises.
